4. Failure is something we all fear. That fear has been ingrained in our instincts for thousands of years. That’s why when failing for the first time, it can be hard to see the benefits behind it. Because while we all fail at some point in our lives, we also learn to take those failures and use them as lessons to better ourselves and our minds! So what lesson can be learned from failing?
Lessons Learned From Failing:
1. Resilience
Resilience is an important lesson learned from failing. It forces us to be tolerant of failure. The first couple of times you fail, it ends up being a big blow to the ego. This blow forces us to take an inward look at ourselves and the failure that has happened in order to assess the situation with a more leveled head. Afterwards, this then creates a growth mindset for an individual which better prepares them for their future.
It cannot be understated how important of a skill resilience is for individuals. Even at the professional level, employers will look for individuals who have a degree of resilience and the ability to take critique. The reason for this is because resilience opens the door to improvement and becoming the best we can possibly be!
2. Inspiration
The impact of failure can often times lead to the best time of inspiration. This inspiration can be leveraged to create new opportunities for ourselves. This inspiration gives us the toolset to succeed in future projects and create innovation in our own lives. While it can be found outside of failure, more often than not, the strongest inspiration comes as a product of failure.
3. Motivation
Often linked to inspiration, failure can also support the development of motivation for a student. While motivation is necessary for academic success, it can be difficulty for students to develop it efficiently. For a student who may not be academically motivated, failure can be a lesson learned. This lesson can be supported by the failure and then motivating for many students in that position.
A big benefit from this lesson is that motivation can be driven by a sense of progress. When a student is able to look back at the progress they’ve made since the failure, it can be a big motivator to continue that change for the better!
4. Reflection
We started discussing the benefits of reflection at the end of the last section: motivation. Reflection is a great lesson to be learned from failure which begins developing as the outset of failure itself. Many students will begin reflecting on their academics the minute they see the failure. This starts with them trying to assess why they failed. This important lesson of asking why is one that will stick with them for the rest of our lives. Like all of the lessons we’ve discussed so far, the lesson of reflection will stick with the student for the rest of their life.
Another point to make is that reflection is necessary for growth. A student cannot properly grow as a person without first reflecting on their past experiences, choices, and motivations. Once fully assessed, a student is able to grow into the person they want to be!
5. Practice Makes Perfect
A lesson that should be etched in stone, practice makes perfect is another important lesson and final step in a student learning from failure. Once a student has reflected and become motivated, they’ll begin learning that in order to instill change in their own life, they must be willing to practice that change. No change can happen over night and with the ability to put the change into action is another important life lesson to be learned.
To conclude, failure is an important opportunity for growth that we all experience. It not only helps us recover from failure, but helps us become a better human being! We all make mistakes, and it’s important to treat each failure as a learning opportunity for the student.
